Gemini 3 Flash, Gmail-Chat Integration, and Drive Makeovers

As 2025 comes to a close, Google Workspace is focusing on quality over quantity. While December is traditionally a lighter month for releases, the updates we did get are designed to streamline your daily workflow and introduce the next generation of AI models.

From bridging the gap between your inbox and your instant messages to a complete visual refresh in Drive, here is everything you need to know about the December updates.

Gemini 3 Flash Arrives on Mobile

The headline update this month is the introduction of Google's newest flagship frontier model, Gemini 3 Flash, into the Gemini mobile app. Built for speed and efficiency, this model is designed to "make light work of daily tasks" while delivering a huge leap in multimodal understanding.

You can now ask Gemini to analyze multiple formats at once—images, audio, and text. For example, you can upload a project status report and ask Gemini 3 Flash to:

  • Analyze the document.
  • Provide a one-paragraph executive summary.
  • Extract all action items into a table format with owners and deadlines.

Stop Forwarding, Start Chatting: Gmail to Chat Integration

Google is removing the friction between email and instant messaging. You can now share a conversation from your Gmail inbox directly to a Google Chat DM or Space.

Instead of forwarding an email or copying a link, this feature lets you initiate a chat with the original email recipients (or a new group) instantly. The email is automatically forwarded, and recipients can open it right within the chat window. This creates a "two-way link" that preserves context, allowing you to switch to a fast-paced discussion without losing the original message thread.

A Modern Look for Google Drive

Viewing files in Drive just got a major facelift. A new, modern interface is rolling out for previewing PDFs, images, videos, and audio files.

The old "shadow box" look is gone, replaced by a cleaner layout that includes:

  • A thumbnail rail and table of contents on the left.
  • A new file menu, toolbar, and app bar.
  • Search by transcript functionality for video files.
  • An easier way to view summaries and comments on the side.

Smart Productivity Tweaks

  • Block Time for Tasks: Tasks in Google Calendar are no longer just simple checkboxes. You can now designate a specific duration for a task, effectively blocking off that time in your calendar so you can focus on the work.
  • Gemini Folder Insights: Gemini in Drive will now proactively provide insights at the top of your folders. This gives you a summary of what's inside a folder at a glance, so you don't have to open individual files to understand the context.
  • Auto Picture-in-Picture (PiP) for Screen Sharing: In Google Meet, Picture-in-Picture will now automatically trigger when you start screen sharing, allowing you to see your audience while you present. You can customize this in settings to choose if you want it to show always, never, or only when switching tabs.
