August 2026 Recap: Sheet Charts, In-Person Meet Notes, and Ask Gemini
August 2026 brought a practical set of enhancements to Google Workspace. This past month's updates focus on improved data visualization in Sheets, expanded AI note-taking capabilities for in-person meetings, and deeper Gemini integration across Chat and the Admin Console. Here is a comprehensive recap of the most impactful Google Workspace updates released in August.

Data Visualization in Google Sheets
Enhanced Combination Charts: Users can now create advanced combo charts by bringing in different scales and metrics without the need to manually re-plot data. This allows for seamless multi-series visualizations, such as cluster columns combined with secondary-axis lines.
Multiple Independent X-Series: Google Sheets now supports creating and editing scatter charts with multiple independent X-series. This allows separate data series to map to their own unique X-axis rather than sharing a single horizontal domain. This update also significantly improves compatibility when importing or exporting complex scatter charts with Microsoft Excel.
Meetings and Communication
In-Person Meeting Notes: Google Meet is expanding beyond video calls to support in-person collaboration. Users can now launch an audio-only session from the Meet home screen on web or mobile and select "Take notes for me." Gemini will capture the face-to-face discussion and automatically compile structured notes, action items, and a full transcript into a Google Doc.
Centralized Meet Homepage: The Google Meet homepage has been redesigned into a centralized hub. Users can view their weekly meeting agenda alongside all attached artifacts and documents in a single, consolidated view.
Ask Gemini in Google Chat: The Gemini sidebar in Google Chat has been replaced with a native "Ask Gemini" chat experience. Users can interact directly with Gemini to search Workspace data, capture action items, summarize discussions, and manage daily tasks.
Organization and Productivity
Calendar Enhancements: Google Calendar introduced a new "responsive to your screen" density setting, which dynamically scales and enlarges events for easier reading on large monitors. Additionally, meeting organizers can now toggle off RSVP email notifications, suppressing email responses for individual events or full recurring series.
Gemini Notebook Updates: Managing research in Gemini Notebook is now more efficient. Users can automate source additions by linking a specific Google Drive folder, ensuring any new files dropped into that folder are automatically added to the notebook. Furthermore, users can now copy entire notebooks, including associated sources and studio items, to build upon existing templates.
Interactive Simulations: The Gemini app can now generate functional, interactive simulations and models. Instead of static text or diagrams, users can prompt the AI to create interactive visual aids, such as rotating molecules or physics simulations.
Administrative Controls
AI Assist in the Admin Console: Workspace Business edition administrators now have access to Gemini-powered assist capabilities directly within the Google Admin console. A new sidebar and AI-generated search overviews can synthesize Workspace help articles to simplify complex workflows, audit application usage, and assist with troubleshooting.
Granular Calendar Invitations: Admins now have expanded control over how calendar invitations are added to user accounts. Previously limited to setting defaults for new users, admins can now dictate invite options (such as auto-adding only from known senders) for both new and existing users across the organization.
